Maternity Section

Maternity wards have 93 beds, 3 specialists, 2 medical officers, 3 intern Doctors and 51 midwives. One of the consultants is government seconded. The sections at maternity ward include; Admissions ward (24 beds), Labour ward, postnatal wards (45 plus 24 beds out of which 7 are private) and maternity Theatre. The ward is one of the busiest departments in the hospital with around 7000 births per year.

The main achievements of Maternity ward include:
• Continuous education of midwives (CMEs) which has improved skills;
• Availability of tools to use in monitoring the progress of labour and for proper diagnosis;
• Availability of emergency drugs which help in handling different emergencies;
• Availability of consultants and Doctors;
• Frequent infection control measure like hand washing after every procedure, putting on protective gear, and sterilization of equipment.
The main plans of maternity ward for 2012/2013 include:
• To reduce on the rate of mothers and babies dying during birth;
• To improve on provision of good nursing care to all mothers and babies;
• To have continue with professional development for students;
• To improve on the nurse and patients relationship;
